In August 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain with three ships—the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María—backed by Spanish Monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He made landfall in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, initiating centuries of transatlantic exploration, colonization, and interaction between Europe and the Americas.
